How Coro Started

Helen Barry, Co-Founder & Chief Research Officer:

When pregnant, I knew I wanted to give breastfeeding a go. When my son was born he was tiny so weight gain was very important. The only way to check was week to week weigh in and pre- and post-feed weight checks. Waiting for results was extremely stressful for me and it was immediately clear that the weigh ins varied wildly with little accuracy. My husband Jamie and I searched the market but no product existed to tell me how much breastmilk my son was getting, I needed immediate and accurate information!

Jamie coincidentally had worked on flow monitoring in another sector; he had an idea of a groundbreaking technology that could be the answer. Rosanne, over many late dinners, listened to us and noticed many other friends with similar issues, we had a vision, saw an opportunity and an idea was born…

How was this never done before?

For years pre- and post-feed weighing has been the primary method for estimating milk transfer during breastfeeding. This method requires specific and expensive scales and strict adherence to protocol to be accurate. Having considered the research on shield use, including their potential pros and cons, and recognising how commonly used modern shields have become, the solution was clear.
Many others have tried to solve the problem but essentially the technology didn’t exist.
For us, it was the right idea, at the right time with the right technology.

Throughout this journey, we’ve been committed to refining our state-of-the-art technology to better serve mothers’ needs. Starting with rigorous trials of various proprietary sensing technologies in early development, Coro has evolved to enhance accuracy across a wide range of feeding scenarios. In addition to measuring feed volumes, Coro’s advanced capabilities now include distinguishing between air and water and providing real-time milk temperature data.

The future

We hope to revolutionise breastfeeding with Coro.

With Coro, families experiencing milk supply concerns will finally have access to the information they have been seeking. We envisage this leading to longer breastfeeding durations and a better understanding of the true incidence of milk supply issues.

We see our technology facilitating further research into breastfeeding and breast milk across the world. By teaming up with breastfeeding research groups Coro can help to advance and progress our current knowledge and unlock further insights into all things infant feeding.
